What we know so far: Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 film, with game developer CD Projekt Red serving as producer alongside Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. The adaptation offers filmmakers a dystopian world where technology threatens personal identity and corporations wield enormous power over everyday life. How faithfully the film will explore these themes remains an open question, as the partnership has already been announced but the creative direction of the adaptation is still unclear.
No director, cast, or release date have been announced. The project draws on a universe in which an implanted chip can transfer the consciousness of another person – threatening to wipe out its host. Producers have not said whether the film will adapt the game’s story or introduce different characters in the same setting.
This distinction is important because Cyberpunk 2077 revolves around a technological implant that puts two consciousnesses into one body, with only one likely to survive unless the process can be stopped.
The game follows V, a mercenary in Night City, a fictional Californian metropolis. V is implanted with a cybernetic biochip containing an engram belonging to Johnny Silverhand, a legendary rock star and terrorist. Silverhand’s consciousness gradually overrides V’s own, forcing the two to work together to stop the process and save V’s life.
Her search for a solution brings her into conflict with Arasaka, a powerful corporation that effectively rules Night City. The story connects the struggle for control of V’s body to the Corporation’s broader control of the city.
Whether these elements can be transferred to film is unknown. Paramount has announced an adaptation set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, not a confirmed retelling of the story of V. No details have been revealed about how the filmmakers might portray the biochip, Silverhand’s presence, or the battle between the two consciousnesses.
CD Projekt Red will be involved in adapting the game as developer and franchise rights holder. However, the announcement does not specify how much creative control the company will have over the script or other production decisions.
Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura brings experience from the Transformers films. Paramount is also behind an upcoming Call of Duty film scheduled for release in 2028, although a release window has not yet been announced for Cyberpunk 2077.
The adaptation progresses as CD Projekt Red develops Cyberpunk 2, building on the original game’s recovery after its troubled launch in December 2020.
CD Projekt Red spent the following years updating and improving Cyberpunk 2077, including the major 2.0 update in 2023 and the Phantom Liberty expansion.
The game has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, while Phantom Liberty has sold 15 million copies. These numbers give the film a sizable audience, but they also reflect years of improvement after release rather than an unbroken success story from day one.
