Reflection AI open source beams weights, post-workout recipes

Start Reflection AI Inc today made the weights of Beam, his first large language model, available on Hugging Face.

The company has also released technical resources that allow developers to customize the algorithm.

Originally launched last week, Beam is one of the most advanced open source LLMs in the industry. It has about 500 billion parameters, but in some benchmarks it achieves the performance of models four times as large. It also uses significantly less computing power and memory.

Reflection AI trained Beam for two months using several thousand high-end graphics cards. Such large-scale training runs are prone to errors that can affect model quality. Reflection AI says its engineers have addressed the challenge by developing a series of custom reliability optimization algorithms.

The company’s error reduction efforts placed particular emphasis on preventing training-inference discrepancies. These are errors that occur when there are slight inconsistencies in the configuration of the components of an AI training environment.

Reflection has also developed a system that can automatically resolve certain data quality errors. When such errors occur, the system resets the training run to a previous stage and continues from there instead of starting over. The company says its optimizations allowed it to train Beam with virtually no cluster downtime.

The newly released weights from Beam are available in several versions. There is a standard edition and several minified variants that store information in smaller data units. This arrangement, known as quantization, sacrifices some output quality in favor of greater hardware efficiency.

The weights are available along with training recipes and code templates that allow users to fine-tune the model. For example, a Vibe coding startup could create a fine-tuning workflow that improves the model’s programming capabilities. Recipes include tools to measure how customizations change Beam’s capabilities and safeguards.

Reflection AI has also released a drafter model for Beam. It can be used to implement speculative decoding, an inference approach to reduce hardware usage. The main idea of the method is to use a lightweight LLM, the Drafter model, to generate the first version of a prompt response. Beam checks the output for errors before displaying it to the user.

To perform inference in a hardware-efficient manner, developers must use a software tool called the Serving Engine. Customizing an LLM for a specific serving engine can require a significant amount of work.

Today’s release includes ready-to-use beam configurations for several popular serving engines. Developers also have access to merged kernels, code fragments that compress multiple inference calculations into a single operation to speed up processing.

Reflection AI plans to release more training recipes following the launch in the coming days. They will allow Beam to refine its own output quality using an approach known as self-distillation. In addition, the company intends to share some of the insights it has gained from developing the model through contributions to open source AI tools.
