The iPhone Duo is an exceptionally built device, especially for a first-generation product. I just don’t think it solves any problems that the iPad doesn’t already address, and revives old problems that the iPhone has long since overcome.

Apple’s first foldable device is an early adopter special.

The iPhone Duo is the best-designed foldable phone I’ve ever tested, with a sturdy and high-quality build and a nano-texture display that hides the fold. I also like the multiple usage modes and split-screen multitasking. While fully updated apps look great on the Duo, unoptimized apps don’t. And the lack of telephoto zoom is a shame for a $2,000 phone.

The Apple iPhone Duo comes as a full-fledged foldable smartphone from a company that – perhaps wisely – sat back and watched as a category stumbled, grew, evolved and solidified into a desirable form factor. In doing so, it avoids most of the missteps of its predecessors while offering exquisite engineering, a vibrant, virtually wrinkle-free screen, and a compelling design. Still, it’s not a slam dunk compared to its main rival, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, and Samsung’s lighter, thinner and slightly cheaper passport-sized foldable device remains compelling. But for Apple fans eagerly awaiting the Cupertino tech giant’s entry into the folding space, there’s no other or better choice.

There’s no doubt that the iPhone Duo is extremely expensive starting at $2,000 and I really wish it wasn’t as heavy as it is. But unfortunately that’s just the going price for a premium foldable these days. The duo’s biggest problem is that it will take some time for developers to update their apps to support the phone’s novel design. When the software is properly optimized, the Duo feels more powerful and capable when multitasking than any iPhone before it.

The iPhone Duo overcomes Apple’s late start by offering the best hardware, performance and battery life of any foldable phone on the market.

Foldable phones will never be for everyone. Some people don’t like the larger screen. Others have concerns about durability, and a device with more moving parts will never be as repairable or robust as its single-plate counterpart. Price is a barrier for others – but in this respect the Duo is surprisingly on par with its competitors (although it’s still expensive).

Apple’s first foldable phone is worth the wait, but it’s very expensive.

Apple’s iPhone Duo is a gadget to admire: it looks slick, works remarkably well, the glare-preventing screen is a bonus, and it comes to market with useful features that should set the standard for rival phone makers to consider moving forward.

Aside from a few minor hiccups, Apple seems to have nailed the landing with its long-awaited foldable device for now. Future versions will hopefully add elements like Face ID while improving camera capabilities, either by adding a telephoto lens or by boosting the FaceTime camera in the inner screen. It would be nice if multitasking became more dynamic in the future.
