Microsoft says Windows 11 is now 20% more responsive and 40% faster at multitasking on 8GB PCs

What just happened? Microsoft has been promising Windows 11 performance improvements for 8GB PCs for several months. Now the Redmond giant has delved into the details of what that means. It claims the operating system is up to 20% more responsive and multitasking is up to 40% faster, but these numbers are best-case scenarios.

Microsoft spent much of 2026 improving Windows 11. As the AI-driven memory crisis continues to push RAM prices to gold levels, part of the upgrades have been to make the operating system run better on 8GB machines.

Pavan Davuluri, executive vice president of Windows and devices at Microsoft, writes that the company is taking a three-pronged approach to this task: make better use of the memory in Windows 11 PCs, protect the interactions that need to work immediately even under load, and ensure that important apps and Windows use less memory.

While Microsoft acknowledges that 16GB or 32GB Windows 11 PCs will still perform better, it adds, “We’re making sure you can do more with 8GB.”

These 20% more responsive and 40% faster numbers come from Microsoft’s own lab tests. So don’t expect an exact copy of these results.

Last month it was reported that Windows could keep up to 2GB more active data in RAM instead of moving it to slower storage. Optimized compression should result in less app reloading when returning to an app or browser tab.

Windows also makes background tasks like search indexing easier to prioritize actual work. The responsiveness claims include actions like opening Start, Settings and File Explorer compared to the January update.

The multitasking test included opening 20 Edge tabs, a 4K video, large Office files, Outlook, and File Explorer to keep everything running.

Microsoft also claims that the changes to Windows, Edge and Microsoft 365 reduced committed storage growth by up to 900MB in multitasking tests, freeing up more space for apps.

There are also smaller savings. Widgets only load when opened on PCs with 8GB or less, reducing memory usage when closed by about 200MB, while Edge now puts inactive tabs to sleep after 15 minutes instead of two hours.

To get the improvements, Microsoft recommends installing Windows 11 26H2 Build 26300.9818 or later and keeping Edge, Microsoft 365, and Teams up to date.

For Microsoft’s own hardware, the improvements can’t come soon enough. A July review of the 8GB Surface laptop found it freezing during Teams calls with about 10 Chrome tabs open, Slack and Signal, as well as random hangs in Google Docs.
