In short: It’s been just over seven months since Apple introduced the MacBook Neo, the sub-$600 laptop that sent the entire PC industry into a frenzy. Several major players in the PC space have since released countermeasures, and HP’s latest version looks pretty tempting.
The new HP OmniBook 5 is described as a premium consumer Windows laptop for those who “want more” from their everyday device. The base model features a 14-inch OLED multi-touch display with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200, coated with Gorilla Glass 3 and covering 100% of the DCI-P3 color space. It is powered by an Intel Core 5 320 processor, 8GB LPDDR5 RAM and integrated Intel graphics.
A 256GB PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSD is standard, but higher capacity options are also available for those willing to open their wallets a little larger. For example, if you pay an extra $50, you’ll get double the storage. Technically this is an AI PC as it ships with a 16 TOPS NPU, but neither Microsoft nor HP are making a big deal about it.
HP says its new laptop is capable of up to 42 hours of local video playback and can go from empty to 50% in just 30 minutes with fast charging. Other notable amenities include Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 wireless connectivity, an HDMI 2.1 output, two USB Type-C jacks, and a headphone/microphone combo jack. A 1080p webcam with dual-array microphone and two stereo speakers are also standard.
The machine is offered in four color variants – pink, silver, blue and green – and comes with a one-year limited hardware warranty. The 14-incher weighs 2.6 pounds, measures 12.3 inches by 8.62 inches by 0.46 inches, and features a full-size backlit keyboard and an HP Imagepad. It ships with Windows 11 Home by default.
The HP OmniBook 5 14 AI PC will arrive just in time for the holidays. Look for the base model to be available in October starting at $699 at stores like Best Buy.
