Sony’s VR patents are reportedly going to Meta, which doesn’t bode well for PSVR 3

TL;DR: In a move that suggests Sony is scaling back its virtual, augmented and mixed reality ambitions, the company has reportedly sold a huge portfolio of VR, AR and XR-related patents to Meta. The deal also suggests that PSVR 2’s rumored successor is unlikely to see the light of day.

Records from US and international patent offices show that between 2010 and 2022, Meta acquired 419 patents for head-mounted displays, XR glasses and VR tracking technologies developed by Sony. The deal signals an abrupt change of heart at Sony, whose senior vice president Eric Lempel claimed in 2024 that VR was an important sector for the company.

According to ZDNet Korea, Meta and Sony signed a confirmation agreement in December 2025, formalizing Sony’s plans to transfer its VR patents to Meta. The portfolio includes 180 US patents, 43 of which were assigned between June and September 2026. The remaining 239 patents are reportedly registered in Japan, China, South Korea, Europe and other regions.

Sony’s decision to divest its VR patents suggests that the rumored PlayStation VR 3 may be dead. Additionally, online rumors suggest that Sony’s withdrawal from the VR space could have a direct impact on PSVR 2 owners. While existing headsets should remain fully functional, it’s unlikely that users will see new first-party VR titles for the PS5 or PS5 Pro in the future.

Despite the disappointing PSVR 3 news, VR gaming enthusiasts have something to be excited about: the recent release of a free third-party VR mod for EA’s 2016 FPS classic, Titanfall 2. Developed by Jordan “CircuitLord” Juarez, the mod brings the entire game into VR through a simple 350KB download, available on the developer’s GitHub repository.

The mod offers full VR support for the Titanfall 2 campaign, including stereoscopic rendering, inverse full-body kinematics, manual reloading, Titan controls, and redesigned interactions tailored specifically for VR. It works with any PC VR headset that supports OpenXR. The mod currently only supports the single-player campaign, but the developer says it is working on multiplayer modes with private VR servers.

Released at the end of September, the mod has already received widespread praise: The Verge called it “one of the best VR games of all time.” The experience is particularly accessible since Titanfall 2 is currently available for just $5 and can run on relatively modest GPUs like the GTX 1080. The developer confirms that the mod works with all three PC versions of Titanfall 2.
