Fairphone 6+ advantages and disadvantages

80

While the Fairphone 6 Plus isn’t competitively priced, it promises to be an environmentally friendly phone – and one that’s primarily available in the US. Some nice design features and a sturdy build are highlights, but the specs on offer here are relatively mid-range and fall short of the competition. The Fairphone 6 Plus’s real competitor is its regular brother, as this “Plus” model doesn’t offer much new other than a higher price.

The extremely repairable Fairphone 6 Plus isn’t just an ethically better choice for a phone; It’s actually a great device. And it’s finally available in the US.

The Fairphone (Gen 6+) is a slightly updated version of the Fairphone (Gen 6) and is now available in the US. It’s a compelling prospect for those who value repairability and want to support companies with strong values.

Can you find better specs for the money? Secure. You can easily get a better camera system with the Pixel 10a. For $50 more, the new Samsung Galaxy S26 FE offers premium performance and a telephoto camera. But you also don’t have to pay anything if one of the phones falls out of your hand and you need a replacement screen. With the Fairphone this problem doesn’t exist and you have a little more peace of mind that your phone has been sustainably manufactured and fair wages are being paid to the people in the supply chain. The Fairphone (Gen. 6+) proves that you no longer have to make massive compromises just to take a stand.

Sustainability is the focus, but the Fairphone Gen 6 Plus is also a very capable mobile phone, with a nice OLED screen, a modern operating system, decent mid-range performance and good, if simple, camera quality. It doesn’t do anything extraordinary, but it should last a long time.

The Fairphone 6 Plus is a champion of repairability first and foremost, and a performance phone second, backing up its screwdriver-friendly design with a seriously bright, sharp OLED screen and solid battery life. Its Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 chip is a step up from its predecessor, but it still lags behind several similarly priced mid-range models, and the camera setup is marred by the lack of a telephoto lens.

The Fairphone 6 Plus is a uniquely positioned phone, which makes it surprisingly difficult to judge. When you factor in its crucial ability to open and disassemble at will, as well as an ecosystem of interchangeable parts and accessories at reasonable prices, it becomes something very special. If you’re bothered by the amount of e-waste that seems to be rampant in the smartphone business and want a phone that will last longer than most, then the Fairphone 6 Plus is the best match yet.

The Fairphone Gen 6+ is easy to admire, but difficult to generally recommend. It’s perhaps the most responsible smartphone purchase for a dedicated long-term owner, yet it’s not the best phone available for $649 when measured by performance, cameras, charging and water resistance.
