The new MK 82 Penetrator is designed to penetrate 3.2 foot thick concrete

The United Arab Emirates has completed the development of aircraft ammunition designed to penetrate hardened targets. The manufacturer reported that in tests the weapon can break through more than a meter of reinforced concrete.

The MK 82 Penetrator was developed and manufactured by LAHAB, an ammunition subsidiary of the Emirati defense group EDGE, and is intended for attacking fortified positions and bunkers. The weapon builds on the well-known MK 82 general-purpose bomb format and allows operators to add a hardened targeting capability without introducing an entirely separate aircraft weapon system.

A new role for a well-known aircraft ammunition

According to EDGE, the development program concluded with performance testing against multiple hardened target types and environmental qualification testing. The company said the ammunition penetrated more than a meter thick of reinforced concrete, avoiding the so-called “J” effect, in which a weapon deviates from its intended trajectory upon impact.

The reported result suggests that the weapon is designed to maintain a more consistent path through a hardened structure. However, EDGE has not publicly detailed the full test conditions, including the exact composition of the concrete, the impact speed, or the performance of the munitions against various types of fortified structures. The published penetration number should therefore be understood as a manufacturer-reported test result rather than a universal measure of battlefield performance.

Mohammed Arbabi, CEO of LAHAB, said the weapon was designed to expand customers’ capabilities while maintaining familiarity and ease of use. The company has positioned the MK 82 Penetrator as an option for hardened, reinforced targets and bunkers.

The weapon’s compatibility with existing aircraft and control equipment is another key part of its design.

Designed for use with existing aircraft and guides

According to EDGE, the MK 82 Penetrator is compatible with multiple generations of NATO configuration aircraft, including fourth and 4.5 generation multirole fighters, variable geometry attack aircraft, advanced jet trainers and light attack platforms. The company also lists fifth-generation fighters, subject to the respective aircraft’s existing compatibility and clearance for MK 82 weapons.

The ammunition can be combined with precision guide sets from EDGE’s AL TARIQ and THUNDER families. These systems are intended to equip compatible aircraft weapons with guidance functions and give operators the opportunity to combine precision guidance with the new penetrator variant.

This approach could reduce the need to introduce an entirely separate command architecture for customers who already use compatible weapons and aircraft. However, the actual integration depends on the aircraft configuration, weapons certification and the guidance set chosen.

A larger penetrator is already in development

The MK 82 is the first of two planned penetrator variants. According to EDGE, development of the larger MK 83 Penetrator has reached an advanced stage, although neither a completion date nor detailed performance specifications for the new variant have been announced.

The program also fits into the UAE’s broader efforts to develop and produce more defense equipment domestically. Building local expertise in ammunition design, testing and qualification can give the country greater control over production and support while producing products for potential export customers.

EDGE has announced its reported concrete penetration and aircraft compatibility results, but has not released detailed independent test data or disclosed which forces will field the weapon first. The planned MK 83 variant suggests that the company intends to expand the concept beyond a single ammunition and create a broader family of weapons for targets protected by reinforced structures.
