The openness of AI coding drives Cline’s open-weight growth

Open-weight models are constantly proliferating, and the AI coding around them is becoming increasingly important to getting them right. Developers and companies weigh costs and performance. The harness helps translate a model’s skills into useful work.

Cline Bot Inc. believes that revealing this level will allow more people to build with AI. According to Cline CEO Renee Huang (pictured), the company’s open-source solution is moving beyond coding to a more general-purpose tool that allows users to make quicker, more cost-effective inferences when a task doesn’t require a frontier model.

“We don’t believe that AI should only be made available to people who can afford it,” Huang said. “We really believe that AI should be part of every kind of everyday work.”

Huang spoke with John Furrier and Dave Vellante of theCUBE Research at Fully Connected 2026 during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed Open Weave models, the AI coding system and Cline’s growth on CoreWeave Inc’s platform. (*Disclosure below.)

Why the AI coding belt is important for open weight models

Cline spent two years building a rigorous rating system based on real traffic, Huang said. This tunes the harness to work well on both large Frontier models and smaller, cheaper models. The company recently open sourced its Open Weight Agent reviews.

“How do we design a very modular architecture behind the scenes to give the model the right tool, the right correction loop?” Huang said. “How do they recognize mistakes and how do they fix themselves?”

The demand for this choice is reflected in usage. According to Huang, Cline’s token consumption has increased 20-fold in the last four months, with a turning point in May when several strong open-weight models entered the market. Much of this reasoning runs on CoreWeave’s serverless platform. Cline also goes beyond the integrated development environment and command line with Cline Desktop, an open source app for open weight models.

“Now that agents are getting better and the model is getting better, we’re seeing this trend of getting more into general knowledge work, people who are less comfortable with programming tools,” Huang said. “We are introducing more services that can be more helpful to them.”

Open weights also change the math on long-tail projects, which rarely justify a large software budget or a dedicated engineering team. Control over both the model and the AI coding environment instead allows companies to develop tailored tools for these niche tasks, Huang noted.

“You don’t really want to pay a huge standard [software-as-a-service] Budget if it’s a long-term problem… [or] “Hire tons of engineers,” he said. “But now, because things are so flexible, you can just build them.”
