The takeaway: Bloodborne remains one of FromSoftware’s most enduring games, even though it never received official improvements beyond its original PlayStation 4 release. More than a decade after its release, current estimates show that it still attracts a sizable audience, which may explain why it has become a prime target for efforts to hack and emulate PlayStation consoles.
Alinea Analytics recently estimated that Bloodborne has sold more than 250,000 copies so far in 2026 alone. The number is impressive considering the action RPG launched exclusively for the PS4 in 2015 and was never updated or re-released for newer hardware despite popular demand.

Analyst Rhys Elliott also noted that nearly 500,000 people played Bloodborne in October alone, including PlayStation Plus subscribers. The game’s HP Lovecraft and Bram Stoker-inspired design has likely made it a popular choice for Halloween over the years. Alinea estimates lifetime sales at 10.4 million copies, generating around $317 million in revenue, while 5.7 million PlayStation Plus subscribers have played it.
The game’s enduring popularity also raises the question of why Sony and FromSoftware never updated it or re-released it in any form. Bloodborne received its last major patch in December 2015, almost a year before Sony released the PlayStation 4 Pro. FromSoftware never updated the game to increase the resolution or frame rate on the PS4 Pro or PlayStation 5, so it still plays at 30 frames per second in 1080p on all consoles.
Bluepoint introduced a remake similar to the Demon’s Souls remake that launched alongside the PS5 in 2020. However, FromSoftware reportedly turned it down and Sony later closed the studio. Last year, former Sony Interactive Entertainment executive Shuhei Yoshida theorized that FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki valued Bloodborne so much that he would rather update the game himself, but was too busy with later projects like Dark Souls III, Sekiro, and Elden Ring.
Currently, improving Bloodborne’s presentation and performance is only possible through unofficial methods. Emulation via ShadPS4 has reached the point where the game can be played at up to 70fps on an Asus ROG Xbox Ally X handheld. Mods allow the game to support 120Hz on a jailbroken PS5, and AI-powered coding has created unofficial “native” PC ports.
Whether Sony or FromSoftware plan to update, remaster or remake Bloodborne remains unclear.
