Intelligent data infrastructure is becoming increasingly important as companies move artificial intelligence from curated pilots into production. NetApp Inc. is positioning its Novus architecture for this transition.
According to NetApp Chief Executive Officer George Kurian (pictured), 93 percent of companies using production AI see data as their biggest challenge. Addressing the associated security risks requires action from modelers, security providers and business operators.
“If you want to scale AI in your organization, you need to integrate it into the operating systems and workflows and the way work gets done,” Kurian said. “This creates … new infrastructure requirements, such as governance, security, control and so on.”
Kurian spoke with Christophe Bertrand of theCUBE Research and co-host Rebecca Knight at NetApp INSIGHT during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed production AI, data governance, and NetApp’s infrastructure strategy. (*Disclosure below.)
Intelligent data infrastructure combines scaling and governance
This week, NetApp introduced Novus, which combines its established data layer with an independently scalable metadata layer. It is designed to deliver more than 100 terabytes per second and supports zettabyte-range capacities within a namespace.
“The combination of these allows you to meet the performance needs of the most demanding companies,” Kurian said. “The metadata service becomes a place for data discovery, data cataloging, and data management and control. A highly scalable metadata service allows you to implement this.” [the] Guardrails that we talked about earlier.”
According to Kurian, companies can start small and expand into large AI factories on a unified platform. He described intelligent data infrastructure as essential to creating trustworthy knowledge.
“I think the AI era requires organizations to be really good with their data because data is the foundation of knowledge and knowledge is the intellectual property,” he said. “To have knowledge, you need a really good intelligent data infrastructure that not only allows you to extract storage and context from your data, but also keeps it secure, well-managed and a resource you can trust.”
